These courses provide
coaching in a wide range of orchestral repertoire as well as the opportunity
to devote time to chamber music and ensemble playing. Participants may apply
to join:
a) The Symphony Orchestra or the Chamber Orchestra (which rehearse concurrently at 11.15 and 4.30). For the 9.15 session, string players can opt to play Chamber Music, join the String Orchestra, or opt to join ’Play More Notes!’ to revise their playing skills. Wind players will play with the Wind Band in this session or take part in wind chamber music.
NB 1 Those applying for part time String Chamber Music are advised to form their own groups as it is not always possible to arrange satisfactory ensembles. If an acceptable chamber music group cannot be formed, students will be allocated places in the String Orchestra, or can take part in Play More Notes!.
NB 2 Wind players will be accepted in limited numbers for the two orchestras to ensure correct balance. Players will be informed within a short time of applying as to whether they can be accepted, and should be prepared to play first or second etc. as required.
b) The Full—Time Chamber Music courses. Only preformed String Quartets and Wind Ensembles will be accepted. Students should bring parts and miniature scores of the works they wish to study.
c) Play More Notes! — see later paragraph and comments above.
All instrumentalists on these courses, unless coming from abroad, should bring a music stand.
